Owen is a writer, runner, triathlete, dancer, and community organizer who is one of the founders of Forest Hills Runners (FHR), a free community running group based in Jamaica Plain. Originally from Vancouver, BC, he grew up in Washington State and Arizona before moving east for college where he played varsity soccer, swam competitively, and began writing seriously. After being told that he could never be a distance runner because he was too big, he started running after college. At first, it was only to stay fit, but he soon realized how much he enjoyed it and also began to enjoy racing. After always running alone (but never with headphones), he joined North Brooklyn Runners (NBR), his first community running group, in 2009 and fell in love with community running. When he moved to Boston in 2010 for medical school, he started looking for a community running group in his neighborhood with a range of ability levels. The idea of Forest Hills Runners gestated over that winter and was brought into the world in April of 2011. He is ecstatic to be a part of the community that has come together through FHR and looks forward to the continued improvement and expansion of FHR over the coming years. As a future physician with an interest in primary care, wellness, and community health, he hopes that FHR is only the beginning and that FHR's motto "Free Community Running for All" will inspire groups like it to pop up all around the country.
