Anwar found yoga in 2006 when he was determined to maintain an active lifestyle – which he worried could quickly slip away. He was drawn to yoga for its fitness component, though after practicing casually for two years Anwar found it was the mental and emotional benefits that kept him coming back to his mat.
With a newfound depth to his practice Anwar committed himself to practicing daily and completed his 200 hour Teacher Training Certification at De La Sol Yoga, Hamilton, in 2011. He is now teaching yoga full time. His classes draw from both the Ashtanga and Anusara styles, along with an assortment of experiences from other traditions as well, combining powerful flows and precise alignment.
It is the combination and balance between the physical and the mental that led Anwar to reorient his life towards practicing and teaching yoga and explains why Adho Mukha Vrksasana (Handstand) is his favourite pose: it requires both focus, and strength.
