I was hoping to find a miracle cure for the smell of the mat !!!
It's embarrassing in my yoga class...it has been a month, and I meticulously wash it down, usually outside, with gentle soap or lemon or baking soda...it smells WORSE than when I got it. I never roll it up, it is always airing out. The smell now is like rubber and horrible body odor!!! I couldn't concentrate on my yoga because every time I got near the mat the smell was nauseating...
That said, LOVE the mat, the sticky surface is amazing, and I haven't slipped once...it is the smell! I'm ready to return it, which is sad because otherwise I love it....

Jenna, thank you for trying to help me with the issue.
As I said before, the mat is unrolled, breathing for almost a month. I surfaced washed and submerged in the tub with baking soda and water.... The smell is nauseating and doesn't go away. I called the store downtown Philly where I purchased from, the nice girl over the phone told me the smell should go away in a week, and she suggested the baking soda bath. Oh well, maybe it will take time, but I have no hopes!

Hey KKPhilly,
I've honestly found the best way to help the odour dissipate is by unrolling it and leaving it outside to breathe. It worked well for mine. If you are still having issues, feel free to chat with your local store about or give us a call at the Guest Education Centre 1.877.263.9300

I bought the mat as a gift to my boyfriend, who suffers from herniated disc, and needs to do yoga everyday. I tried surface washing,CSS directed, and the smell didn't fade. I have been airing out since the day I bought it, almost 1 month ago, and the nauseated smell won't go away. Today I soaked in the tub with some baking soda and water, and let it dry, it didn't work...
... I wonder if a defected product was sold to me, because I remember buying these googles before from Marshall's that had the same smell on the rubber, and it toke about 1 year to desapear...
... Oh boy! Hot potatoes, because I don't know what to do anymore.
Suggestions?

My husband own The Mat in green, and I own a black one. We bought them at the same store at the same time. Is it normal that his has more grip than mine? I still slide on the black one, and when I use his (i.e. the green one) I could hold a pose for hours without moving... I take care of both mats (he's a man, he does not care if it gets dirty!), and wash them the same way with a few drops of mild dish soap in the bathub, give them a good rincing and leave them to air dry... Any idea why the green one has more grip while I keep sliding on the black one?

I am lucky enough that my studio offers mat storage (beacuse this mat is pretty hefty in weight to carry around!)

I was wondering if you could recommend natural, non-oil cleansing wipes that could be used on this mat after every practice.

I agree with Mel, the smell is so toxic. I got two of them for Christmas and excited to use them, but they have been sitting in my house airing out to get rid of the smell so ive been using my old one! For the price of the mat it really annoys me that lululemon cant get rid of the smell before selling them. Ive washed it a bit but still smells so not sure how to get rid of the plastic smell! It seriously stunk up the whole room

Hey Brian,
I wouldn't recommend using disinfectant wipes as it may have a negative impact on the mat. We recommend using natural based, non-oil cleaners or warm soapy water when you need to give it a good clean. The Mat does have an anti-bacterial additive to prevent mold and mildew.

Hope that helps,
~Jenna

Can I use the bleach free Clorox disinfectant wipes on The Mat? Will it ruin the anti-slip properties?

Hi Mel,
The first time I practised on my mat I noticed the distinct smell as well. In order to get rid of the smell, I suggest washing your mat with a solution of soap and water. Once I did this, the smell did subside.

So great to hear how much you are loving your mat, Ashley! Yes, stay away from any oil based cleaners as this can affect your mat and it's grippiness. Juice of half a lemon to a whole lemon in a spray bottle of water should be good. Play around with what works best for you.

It's also great to give your mat a deep clean from time to time depending on how much you use it. You can submerge it your bath tub with just enough water to cover it. Then add only a few drops of dish soap and give it a nice rub down. Once that is done, keep it unrolled letting it air dry. This can take a bit of time depending on the temperature and where it is drying, so it's best to have a back up if you are planning to practice yoga that day.

I LOVEEEEEEEEEEEE my mat SO much! Although I could probably go without my skidless towel I don't want to make a boom in the middle of class! I was wondering though, I've had it a little over a year and have tried lemon water and soapy water but I still feel like it has a little stank to it. Could you give a recommendation of the proportions for each? I was told to not use tea tree oil; so is it recommneded to not use any oil at all on it? I was thinking of using some lavender oil to freshen it up a bit! Thank you!

Love this, and please discard any of those negative comments below. They probably have never owned one. A little of the price is name brand a big part of it is quality. It's for girls who workout hard so they need the great quality lululemon offers, and the girls who still want to look good while they work out. A good way to make staying in shape your new way of life. Run 4 miles and you can stop by the store and not look horrible. If your not sold with this mat, then please purchase the wunder under pant. Absolutely the best pants for any workout. Thanks
