About pain in your wrists I found it helpful to focus on tucking my shoulders away from my ears lifting my heart and focusing on coming forward onto my fingers instead of the back of the palm. You can strengthen wrists by getting a bucket of sand or rice and plung your hand in rotating the hand in a circle clockwise and counter clockwise.

I am 5'2" weighing in at 132 lbs. and I love arm balances. I even have a negative 2" ape index. Now that does make it hard to do binds but I can and same with arm balances. Starting with crow is helpful and really focusing on being able to really hold the pose then starting to straighten the arms. From there you will get them all! :) Breathe deep, keep the core tight and heart lifted! The body goes where the eyes go so keep those eyes up and you will be soon too!

Hi Remi,
In your case I would suggest seeking out your yoga instructor after practice and asking them to take a look at your pose to help you find adjustments that prevent the pain. You should never be feeling sharp pain in your practice, and I am sure that a teacher would be able to modify the pose to avoid that sensation. If you have any other yoga related questions, please feel free to email askanexpert@lululemon.com.

I have also had some trouble with arm balances myself. I have attempted pigeon pose for about 6 months and still cannot get the hang of it. Whenever i try the pose, I start to feel a shooting pain in my wrists, and this stops me from really getting into the pose. Any suggestions for how to avoid or overcome this problem?

arm balances are about 2 things: physics and hip-opening. with practice, a lot of hip opening, and an awareness of where your body weight needs to be placed, almost all arm balances are achievable. regardless of size or strength! Pigeon pose for everyone!
