Meet the Contributor: Michael

I was a high-school English and Journalism teacher in New Zealand, before moving to Europe. All my travel and exploring still hasn’t satiated my voracious appetite for a good story.

If I could do any job and be guaranteed not to fail, I’d spend my days writing children’s books.

meditation in the modern world

The classic meditation image of a sage sitting on top of a mountain, in lotus position, needs a little updating. In today’s social-media, multi-tasking, smart-phone world, few of us feel we have the time to meditate, let alone climb a mountain. If the word mediation scares you, rename it ‘mindfulness’.

mint is cool

Mint is often neglected; an aesthetic garnish to be pushed to the edge of the plate as we devour our desserts. Mint is so much more: it’s a colour; it’s an app; it’s where they literally make money and it’s easy to grow on the patio. This summer, let’s start to give mint the respect it deserves.

Lately, scientists in the sunscreen industry have been in the metaphorical hot seat. Sunscreen use is at an all time high (good) but so are skin cancer rates (bad). ‘Sunscreen causes cancer’ would’ve made a much more sensational title for this post but it’s actually misuse of sunscreen that’s adding to cancer’s success. People have a false sense of protection with sunscreens. Instead we should be getting smaller doses of sun and covering up more.

bike helmets: safety or style?

Let’s face it; no-one wants to wear a helmet when they ride. We’d much rather sport a summery straw number or a jauntily angled fedora; or better yet, let our waxen, flaxen hair flow behind us like streamers from our childhood handlebars.
