After discovering one of my old dance recital VHS a few years back, I did two things. I wondered why my parents kept me enrolled in a dance program for so long and I vowed to stay clear of a dance floor for the rest of my life. That was until I discovered a fitness class where I found myself plié-ing and elevé-ing at the barre once more and, surprisingly, quite liking it. Our Boston-based Core Fusion Ambassador, Andrea Isabelle Lucas, takes us back to first position with the benefits of barre.

For decades, devotees have transformed their health through this practice, which provides the perfect balance of safe and challenging work through a blend of yoga, Pilates and ballet. Lotte Berk (a professional Ballerina) created this practice when she blended orthopedic exercises with her dance training while rehabbing an injury. These days we are seeing an explosion of Lotte Berk-inspired barre programs under a variety of names (Core FusionNalini Method, Bar Method, Barre Fitness, Physique 57, Dailey Method, Rasamaya Barre, Pure Barre).

Regular practice (three to five times a week) can increase muscle density, decrease body fat, improve flexibility and posture and rev up your metabolism. The hour-long class is a blend of strength training with our own body weight or light hand weights, interval cardio and lots of stretching.  The ballet-inspired workout focuses on incredibly efficient, tiny movements. Take our average sit-­up. There is about a one-inch range of motion that makes up the most challenging and beneficial part of that exercise – we’ll call it the sweet spot.  In a barre class, we’ll spend several minutes holding and working with tiny pulses in that sweet spot until our muscles not only burn but also shake with fatigue. Each muscle group is stretched immediately after it’s worked which promotes longer, leaner muscles and better recovery so we’re less sore the next day.

Don’t be fooled by its ballet roots, even though it looks graceful, it’s anything but effortless. Are you ready to return to the barre – even if your childhood experience was as embarrassing and uncoordinated as mine?

Thanks Jonas! Vicki, I actually checked in with Dave Sciacca (also of Training Mobs!) and he mentioned that there isn’t really any barre studios yet in Montreal, but that the closest thing in terms of core philosophy might be Essentrics at Cielo studios. Hope that helps!

LOL! Betty I thought the same thing when I read that line! I take ballet twice a week and my ballet class is anything BUT effortless :) But I like the idea of barre workouts too.

I LOVE barre classes! I’ve been taking them for 3 years, teaching them for 1.5 years. You have to check out Tracey Mallet’s Booty Barre method ( best and hardest barre class I’ve experienced yet!!

I am 50 years old and have been doing barre for the last 2 years. I am in the best shape of my life. Never have to think about posture,, my much improved muscle tone keeps me ramrod straight! Was starting to have joint pain including a frozen shoulder. The pain is gone, the mobility feels like I am 20 years old.
Shout out to Pilates Principle in Latham NY.. Beautiful place with the most supportive staff.

How could you guys not include Pure Barre? It has been around for over ten yrs with over 100 locations. That is a huge oversight on your part especially since a good majority of the studios have been carrying your apparel around from the beginning. I am truly shocked that you do not support one of the strongest following in barre techniques.

This class sounds like so much fun! I’ve heard so much about it and am looking forward to trying it! I am wondering how it creates longer muscles? Does it change the point at which the muscle attaches to the bone? Or does it somehow make the bones longer thus making the muscles longer as well? I am so interested in the physiology of how one can lengthen one’s muscles as I thought they were a genetically predetermined length… This is exciting new science!

Love this post and absolutely LOVE barre work outs. I go to Studio BFF (Ballet Fusion Fitness), the most amazing and unique ballet based fitness studio, in Arizona. Not only has it changed my attitude towards exercise but it’s changed my body to be longer, leaner and stronger.

I incorporate Alissa Perzow’s Xtend Barre class at DBS Fitness Concepts (Montreal) in my weekly workout regime and I have never felt better in my life. It is a combination of pilates and dance and it brings me right back to doing ballet as a child and the beautiful feeling it provides inside and out. Alissa is a former ballerina and fitness enthusiast and it shows in her training method – her body moves with grace and elegance and she’s a true inspiration. She is an excellent instructor and makes you feel like there are no limits to what you can achieve and are capable of doing. Not to mention her affinity towards Lululemon! In my opinion the perfect match! They were just featured in The Montreal Gazette yesterday, check it out!

I have been blessed to bring pure barre to the NC area and also a lululemon ambassador. Our clients have seen amazing results both physically and in terms of mind- body connection. It is truely a great workout, effective and non jarring on your joints! Check out a

Great post on barre classes however you failed to mention the best of all barre classes, Pure Barre! As an avid traveler I have had the privilege of taking classes at several different barre studios in the country and Pure Barre is by far my favorite. Great workout,music,and instructors! I always know what I am going to get at every and any PB studio…not just a workout but a mind body experience that keeps me coming back for more! If you haven’t tried it yet you are missing out! They have classes all over check out locations on their won’t be sorry! Please excuse my rambling but PB is the one workout I have found that I actually look forward to doing:)

Barre classes are my favorite workout. It is the perfect combination of yoga, Pilates and cardio. I love taking my Xtend barre classes with Alissa Perzow. The hour flies by and each class is different. My legs shake abd I love that! I try to do barre classes 3 times a week. It’s the only workout I need!

BARRE has come to MTL! Check out for more details.

The studio is currently in a temporary downtown location with class schedule based on client demand however the official location will be opening downtown MTL in December!

I love the Xtend barre class I take with Alissa Perzow at DBS gym every week. It is a fabulous full body work out — core work, flexibility, balance, endurance and even cardio. I feel great during the class and even better after!

I’ve been doing Alissa Perow xtend barre class at DBS in Montreal for over a year. I love how’s it changed my body. My core is stronger and my legs and arms are leaner and my flexiblity has improved 10 folds. I never miss her Monday class!

I have been taking Alissa Perzows Barre classes in Montreal for the last few months – ever since it was introduced. They are amazing! The best workout I ever had. It is the complete workout for me a mix between pilates, yoga and cardio. She is also the best teacher mixing it up every class. The hour flies by!!!

I love barre-based workouts and my favorite is Barre3 (, which was forgotten from the post. I have tried other studios and Barre3 is definitely my favorite! They have studios all over the country (when I travel, I always check to see if there is a studio in that city). I can’t recommend this workout enough! Love the new barre collection and this post. I came across barre two months ago as I was trying to rebuild by muscle tone and strengthen my core from having my first baby in April. My first class felt like the hardest thing I have ever done and I wanted to quit after 5 minutes. I’m glad I didn’t because weekend barre classes are now a highlight of my week thanks to the instructors at Baltimore Barre.
