Katie (Key Leader at Vancouver's West 4th Store) is almost as crazy about running as she is about making delicious, healthy food. She's finally been persuaded to share her favourite smoothie recipe. She recommends it as a powerful way to start the day or an amazing post-run energizer.

Katie's an advocate of the Magic Bullet. If you don't have a Magic Bullet, you can put the ingredients together in a 2-cup (500ml/20 oz) container before throwing them in your blender.

step 1 - into the cup

-one large handful of fresh spinach (raw), squish to bottom of cup

-2 tbsp plain yogurt

-1/2 tsp cinnamon

-1 tsp matcha green tea powder

-1 tsp freshly grated ginger

-1/2 ripe banana

Fill the rest of the cup with frozen blueberries (or frozen berry of your choice)

Add as much chilled green tea as the cup will allow

step 2 - blend & enjoy

To kick it up a notch, or for a more substantial meal, add 2 tbsp of granola and 1/2 tbsp hemp hearts. Enjoy this variation with a spoon.

I broke down and bought a Vitamix and am in absolute LOVE…I often wish it was as portable as the bullet though:).

Laura – I’ve heard such great things about the Vitamix although I will say my Black n Decker can make a lot of the pureed veggie juices my gf makes only it takes a wee bit longer.

Will def’ly try this recipe though! Any other peeps have good ones to share?

I have a blendtec…. It’s life changing! My hubs and I both use it every day. Bought it from Costco one of the best investments EVER!!! that smoothie sounds delicious but has too much caffeine for me personally. I’d have a heart attack!

I agree about the Vitamix – LOVE mine and use it nearly every day. I have a Magic Bullet too, but since I blend fruits and veggies I save my Bullet for making pesto, etc. Vitamix is my smoothie queen! And I drink a LOT of smoothies :-)

Do you ever add protein powder to your smoothies after a run? I like to add ice to my smoothies, can the Magic Bullet handle that?

Mel – I have used ice in my Magic Bullet with no problems at all! I generally use both frozen berries and ice in my smoothies and I find the Magic Bullet to blend them perfectly! :)

This sounds really good, but any ideas on a replacement for the green tea for those of us that can’t have caffeine?

Try using Carrot juice, Pom juice, Kefir, or Acai juice. :) Perhaps one of those will be a good sub.

is it also possibel to use coco milk instead of water? I even like the idea of milk.

I do agree with Amanda. Acai Juice is the best!
