put your goals out there.

The perfect fit

Above: Alex in her new pair of perfectly fitting Groove Pants.

I recently had a guest experience that has impacted me on so many levels that I had to share it.

A young woman named Alex and her little sister were in the changing room having the little sister's pants hemmed. Alex was trying on one of our new hoodies and trying to decide between two colours. After deciding that the one with the pink stripes fit nicely the little sister made a comment about how Alex wouldn't have fit into that hoodie a few months ago.

Always curious to learn more about our guests I asked Alex what her sister meant. She told me that she is 20 years old and that she was a size 24 in January. At that time her doctor told her that she had to lose weight and change her habits or the long-term impact on her health and life would have severe consequences. Since her doctor's warning Alex has revolutionized her lifestyle – incorporating healthy eating and regular exercise. To date she has lost an amazing sixty pounds.

Alex then said that her "goal has been to fit into a pair of lululemon pants."

While the girls got changed, I grabbed our incredible store manager and told her that I really wanted to do something to demonstrate that lululemon is a goal-oriented and health conscious team would support Alex in her goal. Rebecca asked me what I wanted to do. "I want to give her that first pair of pants," I said. I was floored when Rebecca responded with "Do it!"

Pulling Alex aside, I said "we are really proud of the changes that you have made to live a better life and that you have made our company a part of them. We are going to give you that pair of pants that you have set as your goal. If they don’t fit today, you can come back when you are ready. But let’s go give it a try now!"

Nervous as to whether or not she would fit into the pants, I suggested we grab the Groove Pants that matched her hoodie. She went back into the change room to put them on. When she came out the pants fit her perfectly. She achieved her goal without even knowing it.

Ultimately Alex took the pants and hoodie home, hopefully as proud of her accomplishment as our team was of her for completing her goal.

It was an amazing thing that the lululemon athletica Rideau Centre team did to support this young woman and it was personally rewarding to be a part of it. I wish Alex the best of luck in accomplishing her next goal.

By putting your goals out there you have a better chance of building the support network required to achieve them. How do you put your goals out there? How do you support others?

Congrats to Alex! It’s hard to lose weight when your so uncomfortable in your body. Just last summer I wouldn’t put a bathing suit on, but now I don’t even hesitate! I lost a good 30 pounds by just changing my eating habits. It’s amazing what you can do when you set your mind to it. LuLuLemon is great at making women feel comfortable in athletic apparel, because it fits perfect & is classy at the same time. Very proud of Alex, I know how hard it is, but you did it!

That is awesome! I had a very similar experience… I decided to start running almost 2 years ago because I wanted to be healthier and loved the idea of being a runner (which I NEVER thought I would ever be). I was getting so frustrated with not being able to find running clothes (good or cheap) that fit on my 214lb 5’3″ body, that I almost gave up… until I walked into a lululemon store in Calgary! I think I spent $500 just on clothes for running (bounce breaker bra is AMAZING!! and still gives me great support after almost 2 years of running!) Since then, I still wear ONLY lulu clothes running. They are amazing… lasts forever, comfy, and looks great on anyone!

Congrats on reaching your goal Alex! Certainly an inspiration to all. Keep up the great work!

As well, this just goes to show what customer service really is. Great job to the staff at Lululemon.

This is an awesome story, and makes me happy to be a repeat lulu customer!

However, as a bigger girl (I wear 10-12 in lulu), what I’d like more would be to see more of your pieces be offered in bigger sizes– have everything offered up to a 12, and more things offered up to 14, or a 16.

I think it’s awesome that your clothes are aspirational, and motivated Alex move forward on her path to fitness and health, but it’d be MORE AWESOME if you could outfit women while we’re on the way!

Comment by Josie — August 1, 2009 @ 2:02 pm

Alex – you are truly an inspiration to all of us who have been trying to get healthy and lose excess weight. Way to go girl!!!!!

Comment by Dana — August 1, 2009 @ 8:41 pm

Thanks for sharing the story. I have also lost over 60 lbs, and my first goal was to fit into a lululemon remix hoodie. I was able to buy my first hoodie 2 years ago, and am happy to say that not only have I bought a 2nd, and many pants & shorts, but I can now wear a size smaller.

Go Alex! You’ve managed to change your life & that’s awesome!

Comment by Kathryn — August 2, 2009 @ 7:45 am

Awesome work, Alex! Keep it up!
And great of the team to help her out!
I love this story. I’ve had clients in the past want the same and so when they walk in to the store and can fit in the pants and feel great, it is so inspiring and makes them work even harder. I have a 68 year old client who thought ‘no way could she fit into the pants or tanks”. I kept promising her that she had put in the work and would look great…she went in to our local Oshawa store and came out with oodles of stuff and is the biggest Lululemon fan!

Comment by Taraneh — August 2, 2009 @ 6:06 pm

Great story. Congrats Alex on making the changes for a better life. I find that the one of the best things about lululemon is the idea that they make people feel comfortable in their clothing so that they can have the courage to face the uncomfortable aspects of their goals. “Do something each day that scares you.” Creating big goals should be something that is scary, but with the support of people around you, you can get over the hurdles and do anything it takes to accomplish them. I have set many goals for myself which have seemed outlandish and crazy at first, but it didn’t stop me from eventually achieving them. I am always humbled by ultramarathoners, Tour de France cyclists and performers in Cirque de Soleil etc. and it forces me to re-evaluate the limits of the human body/spirit and shows we are capable of so much more.

I have battled weight issues all my life. Only as of recently I had finally managed to maintain my goal weight for about 3 years before gaining it all back with my pregnancy. One year postpartum and I’ve only managed to get down to about 205lbs (5’7 frame Size 16-18 aprox) I agree with the previous poster who’s comment indicated a request for plus sized active wear. Several months ago I was visiting Winnipeg and stopped in the LULU store just to get an idea of the sizing available. I looked away from fellow shoppers in teary eyed shame as I unsuccessfully tried to zip up the largest sized hoodie I could find. My first thought was “Am I doomed to work out in my hubby’s sweats and beer case t-shirts?” Having nothing remotely flattering to wear when out to exercise has had a HUGE impact on whether or not I actually leave the house therefore I think LULU really needs to start tapping into the plus sized market. If not for incentive for larger people like myself to get up and get moving then at least for sales and profit. I know a ton of larger women just itching to don a pair of those great ass pants! FYI Just purchased my first pair of groove pants online. Sz 12. Not a snowballs chance in hell I’ll fit them anytime soon but I’m determined to work out naked if I have to in order to restore my body to it’s former glory! To Alex..If anyone what it’s like to work like a sonofabastard to get where you are it’s me..Bang up job babe! Proud of you!

I recently had a horrible experience with a store in California and it makes me so hopeful to read about customer service that goes above and beyond what they’re expected to do. It shows me that Lululemon training has to be doing something right and that my experience is just that ONE store out of so many in the world. To the educator to helped Alex, I wanted to say thank you in helping me believe in Lululemon again. To Alex, I wanted to say that I may not know you but I’m proud of you :) Thanks.

Comment by Eleanor — August 12, 2011 @ 1:39 pm

Hey Eleanor,

I’m sorry to hear that you’ve had such a negative experience in one of our stores in the past. If you’d like to chat about this further, please feel free to give us a call at the Guest Education Centre, 1.877.263.9300 or to email details to gec@lululemon.com. One of our educators would be happy to discuss your experience with you.
