The annual Amgen Tour of California starts this week with seven different races over seven days from May 12-19. The race brings together teams from Europe, South America, and North America, challenging riders with a new route every year.

This year, it starts in Escondido, and travels north over the week and finishes in Santa Rosa. Each day is intense, With over four hours of intense racing over some of California's most beautiful (and challenging) terrain, the riders will cover roughly 650 miles over the seven days.

To help our friends at BMC Race Team, with riders from Belgium, Norway, USA, Switzerland, France, Italy, and Germany, prepare for the daunting week ahead, we held a kickoff party this week at our La Jolla store in San Diego. Unlike the typical fiesta, it was hold the tequila but full speed ahead on the sombreros and of course, a pinata.

l-r: Philippe Gilbert (Belgium), Amael Moinard (France), Michael Schaer (Switzerland), Mattias Frank (Switzerland)

But it's not all fun and games for the team - they're well-trained, ready to roll, and have been practicing yoga at their training camps earlier this year taught by lululemon ambassador Ted McDonald from Malibu.

If you want to follow BMC and their fortunes this week and beyond, head over to www.bmcracingteam.com. Live daily coverage of the race is also available at www.amgentourofcalifornia.com (their app is one of our favorites for watching live sport).

We asked one of our superstar members of the Specialized-lululemon cycling team to share with us what is going through her mind at the beginning of yet-another busy season of racing. Meet Gillian Carleton, a track cyclist from Victoria B.C. who we think is just the cat's pyjamas (she also has the best hair ever!)

the road ahead: an action-packed 2013

As I write this, I'm packing (yet again) for a race. Tomorrow marks the beginning of the 2013 race season, and I'm more than a bit anxious about it. After such an exciting year filled with so many new experiences, thousands of international travel miles, and a fair amount of (good) stress, I feel like I'm being dragged kicking and screaming out the end of this off-season. Just one more week, please!

To be fair, my schedule has been picking up already for a month now. Just last week I returned to B.C. after a very successful first training camp in sunny Portugal with my new team, Specialized-lululemon. As 2013 will be my first professional road season and I'm coming into the whole thing as a bit of a novice, I admit I was quite nervous to start training with my new teammates, most of whom I had never met before! However, my fears were quickly laid to rest by the end of the first day. There's a reason that Specialized-lululemon is the most successful women's team in the world - the staff, riders, and sponsors are hand-picked from the best, and they all bring something unique and important to the table. I am so incredibly excited to contribute to that tradition of excellence in the next year.

However, with excellence comes expectations. both internal and external. I am so proud of what I've accomplished in my short career, but I'm well aware that the bar has been raised for next year, and the next four years. Hence my desire for a just a few more days away from it all, a desire that I'm sure is shared by many.

This year, it is my personal goal to acknowledge these feelings; acknowledge and accept that I am human and that it is normal to feel nervous about things that matter.

By end of day tomorrow, after 100+ laps at breakneck speed on the velodrome, any anxiety I may have inwardly harboured will be gone. I'm a professional athlete, and in my heart there is really nothing I love more than competition....and honestly, there's no head space left for self-doubt anyway when I'm pushing myself harder than ever before.

What are the little things you try to achieve that accompany the big goals you are accomplishing? Is it appreciating the little moments? Embracing failure? Share with us what small things you concentrate on while climbing your proverbial "goal mountains".

5:37:34
This is the time it took Kat, our junior people program manager, to ride her borrowed steel bike from Vancouver to Whistler in her first GranFondo in 2011.

4:00:00
The time she set her sights on to complete the same grueling course in 2012.

How was she going to knock an hour and 37 minutes off her time? By setting a goal, getting the right bike and, of course, training hard.

step 1: find the perfect fit

I knew my borrowed bike just wasn’t going to cut it if I was going to finish sub 4 hours. I began scouring the Vancouver bike scene and was most impressed with The Bike Gallery on West 10th. They understood that my bike is a part of me and that it’s really important for it to fit perfectly, especially since I have to sit on it for so long! Sidenote: If you’re in the market for a new ride, I highly recommend taking the time to find a shop that is as passionate about cycling as you are – it’ll most definitely be worth every penny thereafter.

step 2: getting fit

It was during that fit session at the bike shop that I discovered FitFX Studio, which was located just down the street. FitFX is a studio dedicated to coaching cyclists indoors and out. When I found out that they offered clinics to teach you how to ride in a group, I knew I had found a community that was going to help me achieve my goal – I was going to be sitting in the midst of 7000 other riders about to start a race, after all.

I began training with them twice a week for the hill series. I loved that I just had to turn up for the ride and Paul, the head coach, would have the route all worked out. Some days it was a ride up our local mountains, other days it was a series of shorter but more intense hill repeats. I learned how to ride in a paceline, which made me feel badass and Paul also gave me other training and nutrition tips along the way.

a hit and a miss

4:16:35. Was my time for the Whistler GranFondo 2012. As I crossed the line, I knew that I had failed to achieve my goal. A mix of emotions overcame me. I wanted to both celebrate and cry, all at the same time! Then, I had a thought; I had set myself an audacious goal. Knocking an hour and 37 minutes off my time is a BFD. I finished the race placing 22nd in my category, knocked an hour and 21 minutes off last year’s time, had no mechanical issues and finishing feeling well-nourished, hydrated and strong. Even if I missed my time goal, there was still a lot to celebrate and I am so proud of this accomplishment. Setting and sharing big goals makes me feel vulnerable but I would rather fall a little short of a huge goal than meet a mediocre one.

onwards and upwards

My legs hadn’t even fully recovered by the time I was committing to my next cycling challenge! In the spirit of big goals and vulnerability, I will be riding in the 2013 Gastown Grand Prix, a shorter, faster and much more intense race than the GranFondo… And with a lot more spectators!

steph’s journey

This year, Steph Corker raced and completed IRONMAN Hawaii in under eleven hours. This sounds impressive, certainly; after all, this is Kona, the notoriously grueling race filled with sweltering temperatures and punishing headwinds. What makes this feat truly incredible is what it took for Steph to achieve this goal.

Five years before this, in 2007, Steph ran her first 10 kilometer race. Fast forward five years later and Steph has now finished a race consisting of a 2.4-mile (3.8 km) swim, a 112-mile (180 km) bicycle ride and a marathon 26.2-mile (42.2 km) run.

Here’s how it all went down.

After catching the adrenaline bug, Steph began running and riding her bike more and more frequently, in addition to swimming laps at her pool (she grew up swimming competitively in her hometown of Aurora, Ontario). In 2009 she set a BHAG for herself (big, hairy and audacious goal): finish an IRONMAN. She achieved this goal and continued to train for fun and various run and bike races, with the intent that by 2020 she would conquer IRONMAN Hawaii.

In 2011, Steph picked up Rachel Ross, an ambassador from our Ala Moana store who was going to race IRONMAN Canada; Rachel was attempting to qualify for Kona one last time at the Okanagan race – and in order to qualify, she needed to finish in the top three. A big believer in supporting others in their quest to make goals happen, Steph drove her to the race and cheered her on that day - lo and behold, Rachel won ensuring her spot in Hawaii.

On the drive back home to Vancouver, Steph realized that after watching Rachel go after her dream she also wanted to race IRONMAN Hawaii – and sooner than 2020 (after failing to qualify in 2010 at a shorter distance race, Steph had hung up her runners). However, seeing this ambassador fly to a different country just to qualify reinvigorated her desire to make it to Kona.

Steph came home and examined her life. What did she need to change to make her goal?

The first thing was time management. She got groceries delivered to her house, had her bike set up on a trainer in her living room and got a cleaning service once a month at her apartment. She relied on acupuncture and massage therapy to keep her body feeling strong and consistently ate clean food for fuel. She got up at 5:00am five days a week and stayed in on nights when her girlfriends were going out to try new restaurants and catch movies.

Finally the moment arrived: the race Steph had selected to be her qualifier for IRONMAN Hawaii. She felt good and ready, a long winter of sacrifice and hard work under her belt. With the scent of aloha in her mind, she took off. As luck should have it on that day, she finished just short in the nemesis position of 4th.

the second attempt

Dejected at missing the chance to qualify again, Steph began to question if 2012 was her year. However, some strange energy in the universe kept her IRONMAN dreams alive. A sponsor (yeah you, Newton Running!) stepped up to secure her a spot eight weeks later at IRONMAN Canada. The only caveat? It was taking place in only eight weeks - not a lot of time for recovery. Luckily, she had a crew of rad friends and family who knew she had what it took to try one more time. Steph remembered when Rachel tried (and made it) in the 2011 IRONMAN Canada race. Instead of thinking of all the reasons why it wasn’t possible (like the fact she had only eight weeks between races!), Steph signed up and headed to the Okanagan on August 26th. With her crew of ever-supportive peeps cheering her on, Steph had her fastest race ever and qualified for IRONMAN Hawaii.

kona bound

Steph had just finished her second IRONMAN in eight weeks – and now she had another race only a month away. She was excited and also nervous – the amount of time (or lack thereof it) was daunting. Nevertheless, instead of focusing on all the reasons why it wasn’t going to work, Steph kept her mind on her routine. She headed to Hawaii a week early to prepare for her big day – and guess what? Her crew of loyal supporters all came too!

On October 13th, 2012, Steph finally got her chance at her dream: IRONMAN Hawaii. She took a deep breath, filled with the smell of flowers and salt water and knew this was her day.

sweet, sweet victory

Steph took off and gave the race everything she had. Despite having raced only a month before, she was able to find what it took to have the race of her life. Despite blisters that formed on the bike, she turned in her fastest marathon time ever and a IRONMAN personal best. Every step was a choice and she remembered that when times got tough in the lava fields.

10 hours, 54 minutes and 37 seconds.

Five years before, Steph hadn’t run more than 10 kilometres. Now she had completed Kona in less than 11 hours, not only beating her wildest dream time but also the sun setting into the Pacific. Her moment of aloha had come.

key takeaways from steph’s journey

1. have a support system that ROCKS.
As incredible as Steph’s drive is, a critical ingredient to her success was her amazing crew of friends and family. This tribe cheered her on, encouraged her when things were tough, believed in her when things seemed impossible…heck, they flew half way around the world just to see her sweat!

2. everything is a choice.
There were lots of reasons why this goal might have seemed impossible. Logistics, blisters, time commitment, money (news flash...triathlon bikes are more expensive than some cars)….all of these things could have stopped Steph, but she realized that it was all a choice. While there were some tough conversations, sacrifices and tight timelines, she made it happen.

3. when you want something bad enough, failure isn’t scary anymore.
Steph wanted this goal so friggin’ badly that it no longer became terrifying to go after it. The fear of never having the experience was far greater than the pain at mile 22.

What is your biggest, scariest, most exciting personal goal? We've created a vision and goals program to help you begin setting goals and figure out what your ideal life looks like. Get into it!

When one of our writers, Ella, isn't making magic happen with her words you can almost always count on finding her on her bike. GranFondos, spin class, road biking - if it involves two wheels Ella's there. We caught up with her to learn a bit more about her cycling habits and more specifically, why she loves hitting the studio to cross-train for cyclocross.

My main sport is cyclocross. I happen to think that ‘cross is the soggiest, silliest, smelliest (and some would say toughest) form of bike racing that exists. It involves sprinting around a circular obstacle course in the mud and rain, keeping your speed up while dismounting from your bike to jump over logs and run up hills with the bike thrown over your shoulder (and trying not to throw up). Basically, super fun. My teammates (the fellows especially) pride themselves on their toughness and have a great time poking fun at each other when someone does something deemed un-tough.

tough guys have secrets too

One of the things deemed un-tough? Spinning (obviously they’ve never tried it before because it ain’t no cake walk). The first time I ran into a teammate at spin class, he darted his eyes to make sure I was alone, then sidled up to me and whispered, “Please don’t tell anyone you saw me here. I’m, uh, secret training.”

Why the secrecy? Aside from the fact that these tough guys didn’t want it to be known that they enjoyed Top 40’s, spinning as cross-training for bike racing makes you fit. And fitness makes you fast. “Fast Patty” wanted to get secretly fitter during our off-season so his competitors wouldn’t know he was putting in a little extra-extra. He was going to take his competitors by surprise and win some races during the upcoming season.

2 reasons why ella loves spinning for cyclocross:

1. target zone training
If you already use a heart-rate monitor and do zone training, you know that having control over your heart rate for an hour allows you to maximize your workout. As opposed to a “regular” ride of 2-4 hours where your heart rate is all over the board, during spin class it’s possible to target specific zones and stay there, allowing you to get more out of one hour on a spin bike than during an hour outdoors on a road bike (plus, the music is great).

2. convenience equals consistency
Another benefit of spin class as cross-training is that you can ride more than you might normally during the winter. Waking up at 5am to get in a solid 2-hour ride (in the dark, cold, rain) before work can be a challenge in itself. Hitting up a spin class at a studio after work with colleagues requires much less motivation. Convenience equals consistency and consistency in training means a kickass you.

Oh and for the record, Fast Patty, the friend I saw at spin class? He killed it that race season.

I love these shoes for two reasons:
1) They remind me of our Atlanta Flywheel opening – I received them as a gift from a Flywheel fan and, more importantly...
2) They’re the best running shoes I’ve ever put on my feet. Too bad I found them late in my running career, I’m pretty sure I could’ve won several of the races I was in! I love the color and the brightness – can’t help but look down and smile!

I certainly don’t lose socks on purpose – it just happens, but I take the same amount of care for these socks as I do my favorite pair of jeans. They’re the perfect thickness and height around the ankle – the colors and designs are pretty fun too!

What started as a functional tool for teaching quickly turned into a fashion item for spin enthusiasts. The Flywheel bandana is a staple in my teaching wardrobe – I tie my headset into the bandana so it doesn’t move when I teach, plus it keeps my hair tucked out of the way, absorbs my sweat and looks pretty badass!

Originally from Texas, I’m a huge Texas Longhorn fan. I love wearing this hat – of course it keeps the sun out of my eyes, blocks the sweat and holds the hair back but this particular hat reminds me of home and it never fails – every time I wear this hat I’ll run into a fellow Texan or get the UT sign. It’s an instant smile!

I easily own 20 of these tanks, the teal one happens to be one of my favorites. It’s the universal tank in my opinion, perfect for running, yoga and FlyBarre. And it has the perfect scoop neckline – easily doubles as a casual tank under a jacket or sweater with jeans!

I love the simplicity of this bra – it’s the perfect amount of coverage and support for teaching and taking various classes. The straps are nearly invisible and I love the combination of the Flow Y bra and the Cool Racerback – I’m normally in basic colors but love the pop of a bright orange, yellow or pink bra under a solid racerback tank

I wear stud earrings and sometimes a watch but other than that I can’t stand jewelry— Except for these fair-trade bracelets! They were a Christmas present from a client last year – they’re actually made out of recycled flip-flops. I can sweat in them, shower in them and they’re just a fun addition to my otherwise pale white wrist.

Cheering on hardcore athletes could almost be considered a professional sport in itself. Here are some of Jaime's highlights from her past four days exploring the Cool Global Sporting Event currently happening in the capital of Great Britain.

highlights from the sidelines

After an intense weekend of opening ceremonies and cheering on our ambassadors at the men's and women’s cycling road race, I wanted to share a highlight reel of some of the most memorable moments so far.

getting sweaty with the locals
Our mornings have been chock-full of exercise from running across the Thames to practicing a gymnastics-inspired floor exercise routine. One of my favourites so far was a class with lululemon ambassador Matt Miller aka "The Pillar”.

watching the faces of the athletes brighten as they fly past our cheer signs
A few of my favourites include:
1. “It’s okay to finish first”
2. "The Queen is watching"
3. “Great stamina. Wanna date?”

improvising with unpredictable british weather
We managed to stay dry during the sporadic downpours with our makeshift umbrellas (read: cheer signs).

securing an awesome vantage point
Thankfully our morning yoga class helped us to swiftly maneuver our way in front of a very tall Dutchman with an orange wig.

celebrating the wins
After the exciting road race, our posse made their way back to the lululemon house for some well deserved hydration and nutritional support! Bloody Mary anyone?

Now onto the next round of events! We're hoping to get a glimpse of the men's water polo... who doesn't love a bunch of fit gents in speedos?

Relaxed and ready to take on cobblestones at the Tour of Flanders!

In March we rolled up our yoga mats and travelled to Belgium (via Amsterdam) to support Team Specialized-lululemon at one of the most epic cycling races ever, the Tour of Flanders. Flanders is known as epic because of its 100-year history and course full of climbs on uneven, slippery cobblestones.

Two days before the race, I taught a yoga class to the team. I tried to imagine I was a pro cyclist pre-epic race, and put together a class to relax nerves and gently stretch cycling muscles, with a playlist that’d ensure our little carpeted hotel meeting room / temporary yoga space would be bumping. Without further ado, here are the reasons that yoga makes you a more badass cyclist:

1. oxygen chills you out

We started with a deep breathing exercise that you can do anywhere at any time you feel a little stressed. (Just between you, me, and the internet - I sometimes do this exercise on the plane during turbulence). Inhale, counting slowly to 4. Hold at the top for the same amount of time, and then exhale slowly for 4. Make this next level by doing it with alternate nostrils using your hand (– and in case you’re wondering, you can get away with this version in the air without looking too crazy), and repeat for 3-4 minutes.

Deep breathing triggers your parasympathetic nervous system, which calms the body and mind. It also helps bring oxygen to cells so that the detoxification process can occur. You’re going to need as many relaxed and oxygenated cells as possible if you’re about to take on a climb like the Oude Kwaremont.

2. dear quads, are you there? it’s me, yoga!

How do you thank your quadriceps and hamstrings for powering you on the bike? You give them some love back on the mat, as well as the body parts that support your legs bigtime, like your hip flexors and groin. Watch these how-tos from our ambassador, Ted McDonald:

Lengthen your hamstrings >>
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HF-AJNRHMxc&feature=player_embedded#!" " target="_blank">Stretch your quads and psoas >>
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVFak90fTYQ&feature=player_embedded#!" " target="_blank">Thank your inner hips and groin >>

3. it’s all mental

Here’s a little well-known yoga secret: yoga poses are sometimes ridiculously hard so that all you can think about during the pose is where your various body parts are and what they’re doing. Who cares if you can’t get into pretzelasana? In your quest to figure it out, you forgot all about that world class sporting event you have coming up and you’ve forced your brain to uni-task. So tricky, yoga!

4. #balance

In addition to balancing your body and mind, yoga also reminds you to stop and have fun along the way by keeping you inquisitive and playful. At dinner with the team following class, I learned about one of Belgium’s most popular exports: Speculoos, a crushed cookie spread that Gordon and I literally became addicted to for the rest of our trip, thanks to our hotel breakfast buffet. Yoga reminds you to appreciate the journey and eat some crushed up cookies along the way.

team specialized-lululemon + yoga

Watch Evelyn Stevens talk about yoga, cycling, and Flanders:

a few other things that make you fast

Of course, the other factors that make cyclists really fast include straight up hard work, hours of training, a supportive team, coaches, determination and drive. Practicing yoga is a tool that that can give you a competitive advantage by relaxing you, strengthening your muscles, and providing mental clarity. Cobble what!?

When you’ve been travelling, your body can get confused. How do you explain “missed flight” and “jet lag” to your joints and ligaments? Our mission when we landed in Amsterdam last month (en route to Belgium to support the Specialized-lululemon cycling team): find yoga.

vondelpark: yoga found us

The scene: a misty early morning in Amsterdam's urban park.
The stalkers: two bleary-eyed Canadians on rented hotel bikes, yoga mats in tow.
The yogi: We came across Ciara, who recently completed her yoga teacher training in India, and had to stop to take some stealth footage.

svaha yoga

After Vondelpark, we flowed and twisted in Wouter’s class at Svaha Yoga.

The neighbourhood: Jordaan, a central, walkable neighbourhood with cute shops.
The studio: a well-established studio in Amsterdam (with two locations). The Jordaan studio has two levels, and feels cozy and eclectic.
The yoga: All kinds of yoga are practiced here, from Ashtanga Vinyasa to Restorative.
Things I loved: harmonium playing to open and close class, chandeliers and a colourful roof, and lavender-scented eye pillows for savasana (side note – I want to make these – does anyone have a recipe?).

delight yoga

The second studio we visited on our DIY yoga tour of Amsterdam was Delight Yoga, where we took a yin class with Skadi.

The neighbourhood: Centrally located on the Weteringschans, in a heritage building with no signage.
The studio: Three floors, high ceilings, steep staircases, beautiful, light and modern.
The yoga: Multiple styles offered, including Ashtanga, Anusara, and meditation.
Things I loved: The most beautiful change room and reception area I've ever been in, sparkly class tokens, the sweet-spicy tea after class.

Skadi guided us through restorative poses and the 1.5 hour class went by in a blur – in fact, I may have fallen asleep completely but I’m not quite sure. I just know that when it was over, my back was smiling.

a few more reasons to pack stretchy clothes on your next trip

downdogging with locals = direct access to local recommendations for the best coffee or post-yoga apple pie

finding the yoga studio is an adventure on its own and a guaranteed way to discover new neighbourhoods.

your body will thank you.

These are only two examples of the many studios and styles of yoga that Amsterdam offers. What's your favourite Amsterdam studio, and why?

In January we said “hasta la vista” to Vancity and headed to Denia, Spain to hang out with the BMC professional cycling team. Along for the ride was Santa Monica ambassador, Ted McDonald, who led the team through a daily yoga practice to complement their intensive training program. Check out this rad video to meet the BMC team and hear what they have to say about yoga for cycling.

(Ed’s note: BMC does not stand for “badass men’s cycling” although given the content of the video, I still think it should).

While we’ll leave biking in a maxi dress to the Europeans (aka the pros) our commuting capsule has got us inspired to saddle up. Looks a side, we asked University Village educator, April, to share five reasons she likes to ride her bicycle as much as Queen does.

5 reasons to commute on your bike

1. it’s a beautiful day in the neighbourhood
Goodbye gridlocked traffic, annoying radio commercials and the occasional onset of road rage. Trade in your drive for a bike ride and you just might see what Mr. Rogers was talking about. On my bike, I’m much more connected to my community. My senses are all heightened during my commutes and I’m always making mental lists of the restaurants and shops I must visit on my next outing. There’s truly no better way to discover a new coffee shop than by getting a caffeinated whiff when I whiz by.

2. get your bike to do the heavy lifting
There’s no doubt about it, carrying your stuff sucks (aside from the impromptu arm workout). Whether it’s your work stuff, gym gear or groceries, carrying the load by hand isn’t fun. Schlep no more – from cute bike baskets to commuter lunch boxes to bike bags, there’s tons of crafty ways to let your bike carry the weight. Heck, there’s even a way to get that six-pack home in style. *Disclaimer: please don’t drink and ride.

3. it’s good for the environment
Being a Seattleite (not to be confused with satellite), I like to think of my city as environmentally conscious with bike friendliness at the top of the list. More and more cities are implementing bikes lanes and bike sharing programs making biking a breeze. Think of all the carbon emissions we could save when calories are our fuel of choice.

4. it’s good for your wallet
Gas, car insurance, transit passes, parking. Need I say more?

5. log a little extra sweat for the day
Riding my bike to commute means no gym membership for this girl. What could be better than getting your sweat on while getting to work? I spend 70 minutes riding round trip and my workout is done for the day. I always feel so energized when I arrive at my destination and I never regret my choice to bike.

Why do you love to ride?

The minute we mixed all-star athletes and badass bikes we were bound to develop a schoolgirl crush (sweat is the way to our heart, after all).

We are beyond stoked to support the Specialized-lululemon cycling team so we jumped at the first chance to spend a little one-on-one time with them. We headed down to Carlsbad, California to hang out with the ladies at their first-ever training camp. They brought the hard work, laughter and inspiring stories - we brought the yoga (special shout out to local ambassadors, Julie Rader and Katie Brauer, who led daily yoga practices for the team).

Here’s a glimpse of our time with the gals in Cali - we’re confident you’ll be inspired (and fall in love with them too).

Can’t get enough? We’ll be following the team on and off their bikes in the upcoming months. Until then... ride on!
