<p><strong><em>Who am I? I am a runner. So when a friend asked me if I would try Kundalini yoga with her, I was hesitant. But instead of making excuses, I decided to join her and (momentarily) left my running shoes behind. </em></strong></p>
<h1>breaking into kundalini</h1>
<p>In those rare occasions where I do decide to toss my sneakers aside, I tend to choose a class where I’m guaranteed to get a good sweat. Somehow <a href="http://www.lululemon.com/education/yoga/bikram-yoga?icid=blog;copy;text;bikram;kundaliniyoga;09232011" target="_blank">Bikram</a> or Power Yoga leave me feeling less guilty when I reach for that extra piece of peanut butter cheesecake- which I inevitably know I will. Yoga for me was a deep breath, a deep stretch and a brief stint in my running routine, but nothing deeper than that. That is, until I met <a href="http://glorialatham.com/" target="_blank">Gloria Latham</a>, owner of <a href="http://www.semperviva.com/" target="_blank">Semperviva</a>, <a href="http://www.lululemon.com/education/yoga/kundalini-yoga?icid=blog;copy;text;kundalini;kundaliniyoga;09232011" target="_blank">Kundalini</a> instructor and lululemon ambassador. Gloria struck me as a tiny woman with a huge presence and just like everyone else in her yoga studio, sitting mat to mat; I was instantly attracted to her.</p>
<p>If you have heard anything about Kundalini you have probably heard, and been skeptical of, the dance aspect of the class but as soon as Gloria turned the lights down and the music up I remember thinking “this cannot be yoga.” About halfway through the class I caught myself dancing like a pre-teen at a Justin Bieber concert. It worked my core, my arms and legs and was the most fun I had had all week. It was nothing like what I’d expected at all. I wasn’t sure how it happened or why it was happening but there I was, in a room full of strangers, dancing like no one else was even there. We finished with deep relaxation and I left the class with a new perspective on yoga.  I still didn’t know a lot about Kundalini, but I knew I was coming back. <strong> </strong></p>
<p>Through Kundalini, I discovered that my breath does more than just keep me alive, it can act as a natural reset button, calming and setting me back up to think a little clearer. ‘On the mat’ I can visualize who I want to be ‘off the mat’ and what I need to do to get there. It’s all about pushing myself a little bit in each class so I can then push myself a little bit in each area of my life. Yoga is time I am giving to myself to escape from the busy life I lead and to get some clarity. Every new experience creates learning outcomes and to call it the end wouldn’t be accurate. There is no end to any yoga practice only infinite possibility for growth. Giving myself a little distance from my regular routine makes me so much more excited for each and every run that I do.</p>
<p><strong><em>I ran astray from the comfort of my running routes and stumbled across something else I truly love. How do you mix up your go-to workouts from time to time?</em></strong></p>

We've affectionately called the place "Boutique Noir" because let's face it, it sounds better that way. To celebrate the state of affairs, we interviewed Sheree Waterson, our Executive VP of Merchandise Management. Why? You'll see. </em></strong></p>
<p>Sheree is the woman ultimately behind the fabulous colour you know and love from lululemon. We are all intrigued by the way she plays with texture, shape and proportion, all with function at the core, no matter what she’s creating.</p>
<p>We’re also intrigued by the amount of black in her wardrobe. The woman can wear black. I mean really wear black. Think 29 days out of 30: black shoes, pants, tops, jackets, hair, nail polish, accessories – all black. Considering our online store is about to look a lot like Sheree’s wardrobe, it only seemed fitting to spend a little time with the woman to talk about her favourite colour. (Is black a colour?)</p>

<h1>the woman in black</h1>
<p><strong>Elissa: So how long have you been wearing all black?<br />
Sheree: </strong>Since I started in the business. I used to wear a lot of colour. When I started, I was a buyer for designer sportswear. We used to travel a lot and so, you know, your wardrobe has to be easy. Truthfully, I love dressing this way because it’s easy to play with proportion when you keep the palette all black. My clothes are all black and my environment has to be white. I admit. I send myself white flowers. I need a clean blank canvas to create so that ADD doesn't creep in.</p>
<p>It’s funny, when I lived in San Fran, I had some friends who had a shop called “Alabaster”. They helped me decorate my apartment.  I said I wanted this particular Napolean couch in white velvet and another piece in white silk satin, a look inspired by this Oscar De La Renta dress.  “Honey,” she said, “we can’t do that. It’s going to look like a wedding cake in here.” That was the point.</p>
<p><em><strong><img title="flowers" src="http://www.lululemon.com/community/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/flowers1.jpg" alt="flowers" width="500" height="333" /></strong></em></p>
<p><strong>E: So you own a lot of black luon?<br />
S:</strong> Oh yeah. (she laughs.)</p>
<p><strong>E: Do you own any coloured luon?<br />
</strong><strong>S:</strong> A bit. I have some jewel-tone pieces, Dark Classic Sport Grey, Snorkel Blue, Flush…but mostly black. It’s about proportion and function at that point.</p>
<p><strong>E:</strong> <strong>Before you were at lululemon you were...<br />
</strong>S: Before I was at lululemon I was President of Speedo North America and before that, I was the VP of Women's at Levi's.</p>
<p><strong> </strong><em>(At this point, the accessories designers interrupt with a colour board to show Sheree. It’s for upcoming water bottles. I get to observe a really unique moment where Sheree challenges them to get inside her head and try to understand what’s working for her and what is not. I have never seen anyone speak so passionately about colour’s ability to inspire, to drive emotions and to communicate.)</em></p>
<p><strong>S to designers:</strong> The colour has to blow me away – I mean literally. It has to blow me away.  This finish? <em>(She points to a metallic bottle)</em> This slays me. I walk by this and think “quality”. It’s really just a water bottle. It’s the opposite of intellectual. It’s purely creative. Are you with me?</p>
<p><em>(After ten minutes of interacting over water bottle colours and graphics, the designers leave the office to go back to the drawing board.)</em></p>

<p><strong>S to E:</strong> Did that make sense? Did I communicate that well?</p>
<p><strong>E: Yes, I get it. I have a mother who did women’s colour analysis in the eighties, so I totally get the whole language of colour thing. I’m curious: how many black pairs of shoes do you own?<br />
</strong><em>(She’d rather not comment, but she did mention she’s in the triple digits. Whoa.)</em></p>
<p><strong>E: Who’s your style icon?<br />
S:</strong> I don’t know. It’s hard for me to say. I don’t really think anyone dresses that great these days. Who rocks hard? <em>(Sheree looks at Janine, a designer who is standing within earshot.)</em>  </p>
<p><strong>E: Ok, if you take “style icon” and replace that with whose work do you love?<br />
S:</strong> Oh, easy.  I love Givenchy. Ricardo Tisci, McQueen - I love Rick Owens. His favourite colour is black too. We're soul mates.</p>
<p><strong>E:</strong> <strong>Black or red licorice?</strong> <br />
<strong>S:</strong> Black!</p>
<p><strong>E: White or dark chocolate?<br />
S:</strong> Oooh, it depends on the brand.<br />
<strong>Janine:</strong> Gummi bears!<br />
<strong>S:</strong> GUMMI BEARS! Vitamin Gummi bears! <em>(We all laugh.)</em></p>
<p><strong>E: Favourite workout?</strong><br />
<strong>S:</strong> Kundalini Yoga...at <a href="http://www.semperviva.com/" target="_blank">Semperviva</a> with <a href="https://clients.mindbodyonline.com/ASP/home.asp?studioid=2196" target="_blank">Gloria</a>, or <a href="http://www.yogawest.ca/" target="_blank">Yoga West</a> with <a href="http://www.yogawest.ca/class-schedule/" target="_blank">Hari Singh</a>, or <a href="http://www.yogatech.com/bios/gurmukh.html" target="_blank">Ghurmuk Kaur Khalsa</a> when she’s in Vancouver. <em>(I find this amusing. A lot of people who practice Kundalini wear all white.) </em></p>

<p><strong>Goals for the year?<br />
S:</strong> Go to Harvard. <em>(Check. She heads to Boston for a two-month leadership course on Saturday.</em> <em>Ironically, she’s wearing a stunning cherry red cropped jacket to celebrate.</em> <em>There’s a long silence. She looks me square in the eyes.)</em> Truthfully, I am so wrapped up in work that the thing that I really care about – <em>really care about</em> – is that the team that I work with is the most inspired, happiest team in the world. That is it. I can’t think of anything else that I’d rather have. Except more yoga. Do more yoga.<br />
<strong>Erika (Sheree's Executive Assistant):</strong> …and drink more water.<br />
<strong>S:</strong> More water, yes.</p>
<p><strong>E: …out of a sexy water bottle?<br />
S:</strong> Yes, out of a really sexy water bottle! Exactly.  It has to be chartreuse. No, really. <em>(Her expression goes completely stoic.)</em> Chartreuse is the number one colour in the world.</p>

<p>As a yoga teacher, I get asked daily about which yoga is right, wrong, better or worse. Truthfully, you need to find a style that speaks to <em>you</em>, which can be hard to do when you don't know what the differences are!</p>
<h1>yoga quick-guide</h1>
<p><strong>anusara</strong>: Playful. Expect to laugh and go upside down.<br />
<strong>ashtanga</strong>: Athletic and vigorous.<br />
<strong>bikram's</strong>: Consistent poses and very heated.<br />
<strong>hatha</strong>: Foundation for many yoga styles. Great for beginners.<br />
<strong>hot</strong>: Make sure to bring a towel - or two!<br />
<strong>iyengar/restorative</strong>: With a focus on structure, usually uses blocks, straps for support.<br />
<strong>kundalini</strong>: Focused on meditation and breathing.<br />
<strong>power</strong>: An athletic and physically challenging style.<br />
<strong>vinyasa/flow</strong>: A rhythmic class with lots of movement. Great for your 3rd or 4th class.<br />
<strong>yin</strong>: A slow class that will take you deeper than you've ever gone.</p>
<p>Keep reading for the extended version of the above list to help you find a style that's right for you.</p>
<h1>anusara</h1>
<p>Expect a playful class with a strong focus on proper alignment and Tantric yoga philosophy (not what you're thinking). It (like most yoga) is derived from Hatha yoga.</p>
<h1>ashtanga</h1>
<p>This practice is very athletic and made up of six vigorous series of postures. It's one of the oldest forms of yoga and is considered to be the foundation of much of the yoga we see today in the west.</p>

<h1>bikram</h1>
<p>You're going to sweat in a Bikram's class, more than you ever thought was possible. Bikram yoga consists of 26 postures and breathing exercises repeated twice (that’s right 90 minutes) in a room heated to 105 degrees. Heads up - humidity is 40% and will knock you over the first time.</p>
<h1>hatha</h1>
<p>The foundation of every style of yoga mentioned here. Traditional Hatha yoga is a holistic path that includes disciplines, physical postures (asana), purification procedures, breathing (pranayama), and meditation. Hatha practiced in the West consists of mostly physical postures and is also recognized as a gentle introductory yoga for people new to yoga.</p>

<h1>hot</h1>
<p>By adding heat it is said that classes will help you lose weight, loosen your muscles (by adding increased range of motion) and improve your cardiovascular system. It differs from Bikram's in that the series of postures are not always (but can be) in any particular order and modifications are often offered.</p>
<h1>iyengar/restorative</h1>
<p>Expect a class emphasizing healing the body and mind through use of supported postures. One of the oldest forms of yoga, it’s for a person who loves technical intricacies and is also great for people who are new to yoga or have any issues with their health.</p>
<h1>kundalini</h1>
<p>Don't be surprised if your waving your hands like you just don't care or laughing uncontrollably (it's a type of meditation- I swear), this practice is intended to wake up the kundalini energy coiled at the base of your spine while activating chakras (energetic centers in the body), as well as detoxing the body and mind.</p>
<h1>power</h1>
<p>Many say Power yoga is the Western interpretation of Ashtanga. It is sometimes done in a heated room and focuses on the breath as fuel for the practice. This practice can be challenging for beginners, but is a nice balance to more gentle forms of yoga once you become comfortable with the different postures.</p>
<h1>vinyasa/ flow</h1>
<p>Derived from Ashtanga yoga, expect a class full of rhythmical flow (often combined with music) connecting each moment with unifying pranayama (breath). Classes can be more meditative or focused on the natural movement of the body, almost like dancing through postures. A great transition from Hatha when you’re looking for more of a challenge.</p>
<h1>yin</h1>
<p>Some believe that Yin yoga is the oldest form of Hatha yoga, since it is the ideal method of physical conditioning for prolonged meditation. Don't let the props and gentle movement fool you, this is not a form of restorative yoga. The long holds require that you focus and release all effort from the muscles.</p>

<em>Yin classes often use props like bolsters or blocks.</em></p>
<h1>last but not least</h1>
<p>Remember: your body is your best guide. You don’t have to stick to one kind of yoga, just do what your body needs!</p>
<p>There are many other styles not mentioned here that I encourage you to discover for yourself. Finally, if their is one piece of advice I can leave you with is: if it doesn't feel right, don't do it.</p>

<p><em>My mom is very spiritual and loved yoga. This year she was diagnosed with colon cancer and had to undergo emergency surgery. She currently has a colostomy bag attached to her, and always complains how she would like to do gentle meditation and yoga, but can't twist or do many of the poses. I was wondering if you could recommend any dvds that my mom could do at home that were more about breath and breathing vs poses. She has to stay at home a lot so I thought this would help her have some positivity in her life. Thanks! <strong>- Tara</strong></em></p>

<p>Hi Tara,</p>
<p>Thank you for your email. There are many ways to support your mom with her yoga practice during this transition in her life. One of the blessings that yoga offers is that there truly is a practice for each and everyone of us no matter where we are at. Asana, posture practice, comprises about 5% of what the teachings of yoga have to offer. The true benefit of yoga lies in the deeper practices of pranayama (breathing) and meditation.</p>
<p>Pranayama practice is a powerful emotional support for body, mind, and more importantly the energetic connection to life (spirit). Breathing is the sutra (thread) that connects life into our cells. Healing occurs on a cellular level and their is nothing more revitalizing to our cells than plenty of conscious breathing. Meditation being a higher form of practice helps to calm the mind of mental chatter and channels that focus and energy into healing and courage to live from a place of possibility and acceptance.</p>
<p>There are many forms of yoga practice that are less movement based and more energetic and breathing based.  A favourite of mine is kundalini yoga. If you can get past the traditional dress and a bit of sanskrit there is a whole other domain of bliss and spiritual practice on offer.</p>
<p>There are many videos available and because kundalini yoga is a formulaic practice, which means it's consistent in its teachings, you could choose any video and benefit greatly. Each teacher is schooled in understanding the energetic benefit of the kriya, which is like a posture but a breathing posture with a specific mental focus.  Gormukh Kaur Khalsa, a popular Kundalini teacher, has many videos available in book stores and on Amazon. The secret to benefiting from any practice is consistency. A little bit of breathing and meditation in the morning and evening is much more effective than doing a lot once a week.</p>

<p>It seemed like Barefoot in the Park, an hour and a half yoga sampler featuring 7 different styles of yoga, was destined to be a rain date. So it was appropriate that on this glorious summer evening, lululemon Regional Community Guru Liz Eustace expressed her thanks to Mother Nature in addition to all the people who made this event possible.</p>
<p>The Lawn at Bryant Park was filled with 417 people young and old, experienced and just starting out, on top of a sea of yellow, blue and red mats. The soft lull of the sitar and the driving rumbling of the drums, created by the group Yoga Organix, provided the atmosphere for an open mind and open heart and accompanied the seven different teachers who were sharing seven different styles of yoga, everything from Kundalini, to Iyengar, to Vinyasa flow.</p>
<p>For those of you who have never done yoga outside, you must drag your mat out into the sun and experience your practice in a completely new environment under completely different elements. As New Yorkers, it's hard to find time to wind down and establish a consciousness that is solely centered on indulging in your yoga practice. In a city where its pure expansiveness can swallow you whole, it can also act as the perfect backdrop to embrace the fresh air and join with strangers in a unifying Om.</p>
