we’ve got a need for speed

One of the best perks of spring is SHORTS. After a long winter of chilly morning runs, there is nothing better than letting your legs out of hibernation (*Editor's Note: I say this while I'm rubbing self tanner into my calves).

I love the Run: Speed Short for many reasons. The wide waistband is made of soft and moisture-wicking Luxtreme (no muffin top here thankyouverymuch) and the seams are flat to reduce chafing. There's a little zippered pocket on the back of the waistband for a key and cards so you can grab mimosas coffee after your run. The 2 1/2" inseam is an ideal length for both quick training runs and on the day of your half marathon. I also like to wear these bad boys during summer at the beach - they are perfect to throw on over your bikini bottoms after a long day on the sand.

In order to celebrate Leg Season (that's what we're calling it now, right?) we have put together four run outfits featuring the Run: Speed Short in some of our favourite hues of the season: Aquamarine, We Are From Space, Parfait Pink and Beach Blanket Blue.

1. Run: Speed Short in Aquamarine (coming very soon...check back!)

2. Mizuno Wave Runner 15 - I LOVE these running shoes...good for mild pronators.

3. Pure Balance Water Bottle - the grippy handle is perfect during sweaty workouts.

4. Rosebud Perfume Co. Smith's Menthol & Eucalyptus Lip Salve - no chapping allowed!

5. Cool Racerback in Aquamarine (also coming soon!)

6. Run From Work Backpack II - color blocked and über functional.

7. Fly Away Tamer Headband in Aquamarine (yes, this is also coming very soon)

we are from space

3. Dense Foam Block - always good for deep stretches post-run.

4. iPhone 5 in White - let's be honest, this puppy never leaves our side.

5. Vega Pre-Workout Energizer - this will put a little vrooom into your engine!

6. Nike Free 5.0 in Black - these are a gamechanger. Buy a pair and thank me later.

7. Mula Bandhawear Thong in White - the most comfy thong on the planet.

parfait pink

1. Run: Speed Short in Parfait Pink (coming soon!)

2. Kate Spade Mikas Pond Lacey Wallet in Zinnia Pink - worth blowing your budget on.

3. Mula Bandhawear Bikini in Parfait Pink - I have junk in my trunk and these gave me zero VPL.

4. Run: Tame Me Tank - great for those with larger busts who want a little more coverage.

5. Pure Balance Water Bottle in Parfait Pink - hydrate, hydrate and then hydrate some more.

6. Nike Free 3.0 - I saw one of our managers wearing these and fell in love...vintage!

beach blanket blue

1. Run: Speed Short in Beach Blanket Blue (coming soon!)

2. Women's Ultimate Padded Run Sock in Beach Blanket Blue (ALSO coming soon)

3. Bath and Body Works Body Cream in Sea Island Cotton - this stuff smells good.

4. Run: Swiftly Tech Long Sleeve in Beach Blanket Blue (yup, you guess it...coming soon)

5. Zico Coconut Water - electrolytes are our friend in training season.

6. Light As Air Thong - so light you'll forget you're even wearing underwear.

New colours AND warm weather = good times ahead! See you on the streets, trails and seawall soon...remember to give the "runner's wave and smile."

Yay for shorts season!! I love speed shorts-they’re the best to run in! I do size up for a little more coverage, but they’re the most flattering run short I own.fun colors, designs, and unbelievable wicking ability. I run in the Mizuno inspires, which are awesome. I like these types of posts where an outfit is posted, as well as a brief explanation as to why certain items are great. I look forward to the new colors/patterns!

I think Zico coconut water is the worst if the coconut water bunch, though– icky plastic bottle/artificial taste!

Love love love – ‘we are from space’ and ‘parfait pink’ are divine! My favourite shorts to run in are actually boogie shorts, but I have a few pairs of the speed shorts too! Can’t wait for the weather to get about 3 degrees warmer and then it’s time to run in them!

I really like the fit of the speeds. It’s exciting to see what’s coming. However, I wonder. Will these new speeds be the same quality as the recent releases (pinkelicious etc)? Or will they match the quality of my black ones that I purchased last summer?

Love these outfits. I second the Zico comment. Owned by Coca-Cola who donated mega dollars to fight GMO labeling. Just saying…

Hope everyone with lululemon’s team in Boston is OK. It’s a terrible tragedy.

Comment by Audrey — April 15, 2013 @ 6:11 pm

Which speed shorts are 2 way stretch and which are 4 way? Thanks!

Comment by Katie — April 16, 2013 @ 4:47 am

Awesome outfits! just love all the items. Gonna buy these for my girl :)

Hey Katie,
For the printed version of the Run: Speed Short they are going to be made with the two way stretch swift fabric, usually solid colours (like beach blanket blue and aquamarine) will be constructed with the four way stretch swift, I would recommend reaching out to your local store to see if they have a pair and can confirm this. Thanks for checking in with us!

I asked the same question about the speed short fabric this week and an educator told me that all of the speed shorts (i.e. both prints and solids) are currently being made with the 2-way fabric, so now I’m confused… Can someone from Lulu give a straightforward answer? It’s very frustrating to get different, contradictory responses when the nearest store is several hours away. Now that the mobile website is listing items separately by color, it would be REALLY NICE and APPRECIATED if the material (e.g. 2-way Swift or 4-way) were listed as well.

Hey Victoria,
I totally hear you and appreciate that this would be great information to have on the product pages. While our mobile site has listed them out individually, our regular site still has all of the Speed Short grouped together, though I will pass this feedback onto our webteam for you. What Somerlea mentioned above about solid colours being 4-way and patterned being 2-way is the best thing to go by, as it is only once and awhile a style will deviate from this. We happened to have several of the newer colours here and so I did do a check with them and this guideline did hold true.

True confession: I can’t make these shorts work. They are too short for this 48 year old runner despite the fact that I have been running for 20+ years and my legs don’t jiggle even a little. And the “run pace” short is too baggy. Maybe I’m trying the wrong size? I usually take a 4 in lulu bottoms. I went to a 6 for more length but still too short (I’m just over 5’6 but most if it is legs not torso length). And the size 8 falls down so that’s not a solution. My solution is the skirt, size 6 (the 4 is too short). But the shorts are so darned cute! Any suggestions? I’m not so overly modest but I have 2 teenaged boys and those super short shorts…I just feel funny in them…

Hurrah for the parfait pink! Running in style in comfort will surely make the activity more fun.

Comment by ces — April 21, 2013 @ 2:27 pm

Tamara- the lulu Turbo shorts were a longer (4″) version of the speed but are no longer made! They were so perfect for ladies looking for a slightly longer cut (and just as flattering!) than the speed shorts. Lulu: Please bring back the Turbo shorts!!

Comment by Kylie — April 23, 2013 @ 11:45 am

I just recently ordered the beach blanket blue run speed shorts, and it was 2 way stretch, so I had to return it and get a smaller size since the 2 way fits bigger on my. Please let us know which it is so that I will not have to return so much :(

Comment by Ginger — April 29, 2013 @ 8:24 am

Hi Ginger,
The stretch can differ from print to colour of our Run: Speed Shorts and I understand how the fit between a 2-way stretch and 4-way stretch can differ. If you are in doubt, you’re welcome to chat with us at the guest education centre (1.877.263.9300) so we can confirm the stretch for you. I will also share that separating the shorts between 4-way and 2-way stretch is something you’d like to see us offer in the future.

I couldn’t agree with Tamara more! The turbo was my favorite. They brought back just the black and as of today, they are all sold out. There were over 300 reviews talking about the awesomeness of the turbo. Please, please lulu, bring these back and in lots of colors! I’m begging you!

Comment by Amy — May 13, 2013 @ 4:42 pm

I too love the turbo shorts. Great fit and longer length. With so many of us in love with them, I really hope LULU will bring them back!

Comment by Val — June 11, 2013 @ 11:19 am

I second and third the requests to get the turbo shorts back! I absolutely love mine… I’ve never before of since found such a perfect running short.

The groove shorts are an alternative, but not quite as good, and the speec shorts are a bit to short for me when running. My legs are athletic and the speed and turbo shorts ride up a bit when my legs run together on longer runs….not pretty.

Comment by Erin — June 21, 2013 @ 2:49 pm

Please, please, please bring back the TURBO shorts, I agree the speed are a little too short for me too and the Turbo were perfect. From Australia :)

Comment by Terri — July 3, 2013 @ 6:04 am

I love the turbo short too! I’m more muscular through the thighs and the longer cut is great to stop the inseam from riding up where it shouldn’t be….

Comment by Diane — July 9, 2013 @ 4:30 pm

Talking about shorts. If i could afford it, I’d throw out all my bike shorts (including my two pair of LuluLemon’s from last year), and buy only this year’s bike shorts. They are the best I’ve ever wore, and I think i own a pair from every major company! Way to go Lulu!

Comment by bobbi Kamil — July 13, 2013 @ 12:29 pm

I too wish that Lululemon would bring back the turbo run. For someone in there mid 40s I do not feel comfortable the shorter shorts. Turbo Run was absolutely perfect.

FYI – I’ve tried the Groovy and they look awful on me and do not fit.

Comment by Laurie — August 5, 2013 @ 10:45 am

TURBO TURBO TURBO! I cannot fathom why lulu did away with this length? I am dying to update my workout stuff but cannot get away with a 2.5″ inseam, just not comfortable. Please please please start making the Turbo again!

Comment by Mary — August 5, 2013 @ 5:58 pm

Please bring the turbo shorts back! I recently lost a pair (I think someone took both my lulu top and shorts from the laundry) and am trying to replace them. I too have quite muscular thighs and am shorter, so the speeds are a bit too short and revealing for me too. The Groove Run shorts aren’t as stylish or nice either, I agree. PLEASE reintroduce the turbo…why did they ever get replaced?

Comment by Jemima — October 11, 2013 @ 8:43 pm

Hi Jemima,
We’re always bringing out new styles each season and I appreciate that the Turbo Shorts were one of your favourites. I can slip this note in with our designers for you so keep an eye out in the new year to see if the style returns.
