Yoga Blocks are an essential prop for beginners, used to assist with alignment in many poses.

Straps:

Yoga straps are often used in Iyengar yoga classes to allow you to better align yourself in a pose and reach an "out-of reach" posture.

Mats:

A yoga mat is the most widely used yoga prop for increasing traction and safety and can immediately improve your practice allowing you to move fully into the pose without trying to prevent yourself from slipping. A basic sticky mat such as the lululemon standard mat (3 mm in thickness) is great for most beginners. If you need more cushioning try the lululemon ultra mat (5 mm width).
