Marti Thomson hails from Victoria, Texas. Her passion for sports and competition led her to a 20 year hobby in natural bodybuilding and figure competitons. It was through this hobby that she met her husband, Chuck, and moved to Edmonton two years ago.
She has been a certified personal trainer since before the days of real live personal trainers. Since she was a cross country runner and track athlete in high school, when the weather was bad, she would head to the weight room. She started lifting at the age of fifteen, and basically hasn't stopped since. It was the death of her father, in 1989, that turned her life into a sort of mission, if you will, to help others understand the importance of a very healthy lifestyle, with good stress management tools, and a strong and balanced exercise program. Since then, she has owned and operated 6 businesses of her own, including Benchmark Pilates and Fitness, here in Edmonton.
About 15 years ago, Marti discovered the Pilates method of movement. Her transformation began. It was the missing link for her, allowing lots of gentle moving and great healing to occur. She has been through two intensive certification programs, one with a Master Teacher of Joseph Pilates himself. Through this work, Marti had the wonderful experience of working with physicans and their patients in a pain management clinic in Texas, treating depression, spinal injuries, and fibromyalgia. She then began work in a hospital based physical therapy outpatient clinic, creating and directing the Clinical Pilates Program.
As far as the bodybuilding goes, well, that is just a hobby for her, though she has competed in over 40 drug-free bodybuilding shows, winning a Pro Card in the World Natural Bodybuilding Federation in New York. She is also a competitor in Figure shows -even at the age of 47!!.Marti has recently been named IDFA Pro Figure Champion, and Masters Figure Champion, at the Western Canadian Classic.
Starting in 2009, Marti will begin to certify other Pilates instructors with Peak Pilates out of Boulder. She feels it is her way of giving back to those who have helped her along her journey.
