Michael Blanks

Michael Blanks was born and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania and it was there at the Boys and Girls Club and at the Martin Luther King Recreational Center that he developed a love for fitness and of community. “It was like a second family at the Boys and Girls Club. There was so much diversity and a sense of community there that it kept me on a good path. I am so grateful for the guidance they provided along with my mom and dad. Mom and Dad really set the bar for me.” Isaac and Maybeline Blanks taught Michael to always strive to be the best at whatever you do, respect, and to “dream big, work hard.” Michael took those lessons and applied them, excelling at dance and basketball. Michael’s basketball prowess led him into getting cast for national commercial campaigns for Coke and PowerAde when they found him, in true Hollywood fashion, doing dunks in a Los Angeles city park. After that, his professional connections opened doors to pro basketball and he soon found himself playing with the Atlantic City Seagulls and the Toronto Raptors. An ankle injury caused him to re-evaluate his path however, and he decided to concentrate his focus on helping people with physical fitness.

Inspired and encouraged by his brother, Billy, Michael developed his own special style in teaching cardio and in personal training. Using his unique and varied background, Michael is able to consistently develop training techniques for his clientele, especially the professional athletes who come to him for training and advice. “I like to view myself as a jack-of-all-trades type trainer. There’s not many places you can go where your instructor teaches, motivates, DJs and keeps it energetic and fun all at the same time.” Michael doesn’t believe in military style training. He likes to keep it varied and he pays special attention to what works for his students and what doesn’t. “As much as I teach them, they teach me just as much. I’m always willing to learn and between my wife and kids, my students and my peers, there’s always an evolution going on to keep my workouts interesting and fresh.”

When not helping his adult clients, Michael devotes much of his time to inspiring youth and getting them on a positive path. He created Drenched Fit for Kids (free on Thursdays) where young people can have fun being active, inspired and learning about physical fitness. He’d one day like to open a recreational center of his own and dedicate it to his mother and father, giving back in the same way the Boys and Girls Club and the MLK Center gave to him. “There’s a big problem today with youth and obesity. I want to be part of the solution for that,” he states.
