On a warm day in 1997 I graduated from North Carolina Central University with a BA in Music. Strapping my Tenor Sax to the back of my beloved BMW K75 motorcycle, we three embarked on a journey to San Francisco to find my inner musician.
In my quest for the ultimate creative opportunities in Rock n’ Roll, I discovered my expressive counterpoint in my first Yoga class at SF’s Bay Club. As an employee of this state of the art Telegraph Hill health club I was afforded a breadth of physical awareness not typically found in the punk performance culture…not to mention regular showers.
The rocker “Doluz” was fully transformed into the aspiring yogi Martin when I followed the inspiration of my true love to rural India for her internship. The beauty and wisdom of the Indian culture captured my heart. I recognized Yoga in everything and everyone; on the train, travelers sitting contentedly cross-legged on a long bench, for a long time; a stranger leaning into my shoulder and joyfully offering to share some tea. I knew then that when I returned to California I would have to deepen my practice of Yoga.
I completed my teacher training with Cyndi Lee of OM Yoga (from NYC) at the San Francisco Bay Club in 2003. This intensive 6-month training program is what enabled me to build a monument to a yogic belief and lifestyle. Completing the cycle was my move to Hawaii, where I was able to rekindle my love for musical composition while teaching vinyasa yoga and surf flow. I am able to teach everyday with love and devotion that were a gift from a friend.
Love.
