We began our journey on May 24th 2003, with entry into the Early Bird Sprint Triathlon as a team – ‘The Killer B’s’. Kat was the swimmer, Kev the cyclist and runner. We were excited to try something new for fun and fitness, but had no idea at the time that this simple step would set us in motion and initiate a series of worldwide adventures.
Our first race was so much fun we signed up for 4 more events that same year, and continued with five more the following year. The Killer B’s were hooked! In 2005, we decided it was time for us to ramp things up and race as age group individuals, enjoying each event experience along the way. Then, what once seemed impossible soon became a reality – we entered our first Ironman event in 2006 and raced Ironman Canada!
Since then, our racing has taken us to 14x Ironman events and counting - in Lake Placid, Panama City Beach Florida, the European Championships in Frankfurt Germany, Cozumel Mexico, Nice France, Florianopolis Brazil, Lanzarote Spain, Penticton BC, Ottawa Canada and Mont Tremblant Quebec.
2011 marked yet another significant step in our adventures as we were invited to race Ultraman Canada - which is a 3 day, individual ultra-endurance triathlon event consisting of a 10K swim, 420.6K bike, and a 84.3K run - held in Penticton BC. The Ultraman experience exceeded our expectations, and was by far the most enjoyable event we had participated in. So much so that we returned to race it in 2012 with our crowning achievement being invited to race in the Ultraman World Championships in Kona Hawaii in November 2012. Ultraman Hawaii circumnavigates the 'Big Island' of Hawaii starting with a 10K open water swim, followed by a very hilly and windy 420K bike and then an 84.4K run down the famed Queen K highway - basically running the Ironman Hawaii bike course from Hawi back to Kona. Being invited to race this event offered us the rare opportunity to take on the 'Ultraman Double' - the distinction of racing two Ultraman events in the same calendar year!
2012 took us further and farther than any season in the past, and our experience in training and racing brought us to a new level of endurance understanding. We raced two Ironman's and two Ultraman's in the same season - the equivalent of 7 Ironmans in 7 months - logging over 10,500KM of training from April till November.
The icing on this epic-Ultra cake was finding out that both of us were chosen as the 2012 Ultra Distance Male & Female Triathletes of the year by Triathlon Canada Magazine.
We continue to challenge ourselves and adventure through life, and in 2013, plan to run across the Grand Canyon attempting a Rim2Rim2Rim crossing in April, followed by a season of triathlon racing and ultra running!
As we look ahead, we also take time to look back. To savour the road we have traveled, to always remember how fortunate we are to have the spirit and health to adventure out and see new things, meet new people and to "LIVE OUR WHOLE LIVES" each and every day.
Happy training and racing... hopefully we'll see you out on the course somewhere!
