"Jean-Louis “Dutch” is the author of the multisport blog “Fueled by Iron” (http://fueledbyiron.blogspot.com/) to talk about his experiences with training, racing and trying out new gear enroute to his ultimate goal of competing in an Ironman Triathlon.
Dutch believes that a positive outlook and never say die attitude can lead you to be successful in any endeavor and he hopes his story and journey will help motivate others to get off the couch and not only become active but competitive too.
Dutch is a former Army Captain in the 75th Ranger. A number of serious injuries including a broken back and pelvis ended his Army career. He now works on soldier equipment at the Army’s Science and technology facilities.
Having been active his whole life, getting out of the Army and being injured led Dutch’s weight slowly creep up to 245lbs with a 38 inch waist. It was then that he had enough and realized that he would either have to start walking with a can or he needed to be fit again.
He chose the latter and spent the next year getting back in the gym; running, swimming, cycling and racing again. After running a 5k, the first he’d run in over 5 years, he was bitten by the racing bug and now averages 20 to 25 races a season ranging from 5k’s to multi-sport events to marathons and is hoping to complete his first Ultra in 2012."
