Like many people, I discovered yoga as a way to release and stretch my tight and overworked muscles. Initially yoga improved and supplemented my methods as a personal trainer, but I soon realized that yoga functioned as a means of physical, mental, and spiritual transformation. I proceeded to deepen my yoga practice and completed a 200 hour intensive Hatha teacher training program under the guidance of Yogi Vishva. As an avid outdoors person, I find the peace gained from yoga mirrors that gained from getting out in the wilderness.
I now teach a variety of yoga classes and draw from my background in personal training to increase strength, improve flexibility, and calm the mind. These classes include: Hatha Yoga (all levels), Yin Yoga, Runners Yoga, Vinyasa Flow, Power Yoga, and Yoga Core. My practice provides for personal and group yoga training. As well as this I am a regular instructor at Upward Dog Yoga Studio, the Ottawa South Community Association and at SOMA Health and Fitness. I am continually gratified as a teacher to see my students progress and find peace in their own practice. I feel complete satisfaction when I see someone experience a physical and mental transformation because they decided to try yoga.
I continually attempt to reach out to those not familiar with yoga, including young adults, adult men, and the elderly. I believe that these groups have unique needs and requirements, and that specific focus could be beneficial. Giving back to my local community is important and most recently I organized a Yoga fundraiser for earthquake relief in Haiti in the Ottawa South Community Centre.
I believe the integration of yoga with competitive sports can be key for improving performance. The focus on balance, strength and flexibility promoted by yoga complements more conventional aspects of conditioning. To promote this tenet I intend to have my first yoga DVD completed - ‘Runner’s Yoga’ by winter 2011.
