I started life as a fish. Yes, I’m a Pisces, but what I really mean is that I was in the water swimming whenever possible. I learned to swim by jumping into a pool without my floaties when I was 3. So naturally, I suppose, my first organized sport was swimming: I took lessons, competed – first on various club teams and then on the varsity team in high school, and I even taught swimming at summer camp. I loved other sports too, though: softball (varsity team in high school), tennis, downhill skiing, horse back riding, and even, every once in a while, running with my dad on the bridle path in Central Park.

When I got to college, the lore of the rowing team totally captured my imagination and my heart, and I was totally consumed. There is nothing quite like rowing in a perfectly set 8 on the curvy and serene Connecticut River. Although I was an enthusiastic rower, I wasn’t really built for it – especially since my college didn’t have a lightweight women’s team - and I soon discovered that where I really excelled was in the cross-training workouts we did during the off-season - running up and down hills. So, as a lark, I decided to run a ½ marathon my senior year: The covered bridges half marathon in Quechee, VT. It was painful, and I swore I would never do another. So a couple years later, I ran my first marathon.

30 or so marathons, several 50 km, 50 mile, one 100-mile, and yes, a few ½ marathon races later, here I am. Somehow, my love for moving through the water has – very smoothly, really – morphed into a love of moving through the air. I still enjoy lots of sports (and who knows, maybe some day I’ll dive back into the water) – but right now, running is my passion.

Jen can often be seen running the streets, paths, and hills, in and around Princeton, NJ – by herself, or, if she’s lucky, with friends.
