I believe that my passion for health and fitness is a gift from God. My thirst for knowledge, my abilities, my constant pursuit of continuous personal growth, and my desire to help others are all born out of that passion. Using my gifts to help and inspire others to improve their quality of life is an amazing opportunity to show my gratitude for what I’ve so graciously been given. My job as a coach/trainer doesn’t start when I walk in the door each morning and end when I leave each night. It’s what I eat, sleep and breathe. It’s who I am. I strive constantly to improve and grow—not just physically, but spiritually, emotionally and intellectually—through books, seminars, workshops & certifications. I hope to inspire past, present & future clients by how I choose to live my life. I do believe that life is a series of choices—and each choice I make is either moving me closer to or further from my goals. I encourage my clients to see things that way too.

I have been involved in fitness in some way, shape or form for most of my life. Through my teens and early twenties I ran and played sports to stay in shape. I was introduced to weight training by a friend around the age of 20 and immediately fell in love with it! I spent my life at the gym—45 minutes to an hour (or more) of cardio everyday and then your traditional body-builder type split routine: chest, shoulders and tris on day 1, back and bis on day 2, legs on day 3, 1 day off and repeat. (Yawn!) I read everything I could get my hands on about health and fitness. Then it dawned on me—Why not get certified? So I did….and that’s where my personal training journey began almost 15 years ago, with a basic personal training certification and a position as a trainer at a New York Sports Clubs. Within 6 months, I was promoted to fitness program manager. My responsibilities included the training and development of a staff of trainers, in addition to generating sales and revenue for the club (etc). I loved the time spent training, motivating & connecting with clients.

After about 5 years, I decided to step down from management and go back to strictly personal training. I left NYSC & got a job as a trainer at another ‘globo gym’ closer to home. I quickly filled my schedule with clients to the point that I physically could not work/train any more than I was. Through trial and experience, I had grown into a confident NASM certified personal trainer but I felt I had so much potential that was yet to be tapped. The more I learned, the more my own workouts evolved. I began adding core, balance, stabilization and power training to my programs. But I still couldn’t pull myself away from the long, boring workouts and 1-hour long cardio sessions every day. I even had a staff member approach me one day and say, “The treadmill asked if you could please take a day off. It’s tired.”

In 2004, I heard about a one-on-one personal training franchise. I had 2 family members who were willing to make an investment. So we looked into it, liked the model & decided to open one. I finally had “my own place.” In addition to working one-on-one with clients, I trained and developed a solid team of trainers. Together, we helped hundreds of clients reach their health and fitness goals in less than 5 years! But it still felt like something was missing… then I discovered CrossFit.

I was having dinner with a good friend, fellow trainer, and former co-worker at NYSC, whom I respect and admire immensely. She had just gotten back from a CrossFit Level 1 Certification seminar. (Her name is Karianne Dickson—now the owner of the affiliate CrossFit Bernardsville in Bernardsville, NJ and CrossFit Morristown in Morristown, NJ ). The excitement and enthusiasm was coming out of her pores! (I don’t think I got 5 words in over the course of the meal). I had heard of CrossFit and had even done an occasional WOD here and there, but nothing consistent. For the weeks and months following my dinner with Karianne, her words replayed over and over again in my head. My interest was piqued. I had been in a “workout rut” myself for some time and I no longer enjoyed training the way I used to. I just felt in my heart that a piece of the puzzle was missing… and it seemed as if Karianne had found it!

About 6 months later, I heard that a CrossFit Level 1 Certification seminar was being held at Guerilla Fitness in Montclair, New Jersey the following month and the cost was $1000. My birthday had just passed and it “just so happened” that I had received $1000 as a gift from a family member. There are no coincidences. It truly felt like while one door was closing, another bigger, better door was about to open! Within 15 minutes I was registered for the cert. I spent the next month scouring the CrossFit website, watching videos, learning the movements, and doing the WODs etc. For the first time in over a year I was excited about my workouts again! (And I was actually sore afterwards!) And—get this—every workout, start-to-finish, takes less than 1 hour (including dynamic stretching and a warm-up)! How freeing!! In addition to doing the WODs, I made some modifications to my already pretty clean diet. I committed to following CrossFit’s recommendation to “eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch, and no sugar” (Paleo-ish) along with strict adherence to the Zone parameters.
I started noticing improvements almost immediately!
The weekend of the certification arrived and I couldn’t have been more excited… or so I thought! I drove home Sunday night after the certification ended, smiling ear-to-ear, every muscle in my body sore after doing “Fran” on Saturday and “7&7” on Sunday (not to mention a million air squats, overhead squats, sumo dead lift high pulls, med ball cleans, etc.), feeling more thrilled, excited, inspired, and exhausted than I’d ever felt in my life! I felt a sense of hope like never before. I couldn’t wait to start applying everything I’d learned to my business and to my life.

Transform CrossFit, an official licensed affiliate of CrossFit, opened its doors at 10 North Main Street in Pennington in June 2009. With a growing set of clients working out in a 400-square foot space we filled up quickly. Within 6 months we were at maximum capacity and before long had 40 people on a waiting list! In October 2010, we moved to a 3500 square-foot space at 1589 Reed Road. We had 25 new clients signed up and ready to go before we even opened the doors!

CrossFit ignited a spark in me that has quickly grown into a roaring fire that cannot be squelched! Before discovering CrossFit, I completed two figure competitions and three marathons, and I can honestly say that, at 36 years-old, thanks to CrossFit, I am in the best shape of my life. And do you want to know the best part? It doesn’t just stop at my workouts. It has translated into every area of my life. It has changed the way I feel, the way I look, the way I think. It has given me the courage to step out of my comfort zones and try things that, before, may not have seemed possible. I want to ignite that same spark in every one of my clients. CrossFit has forever transformed my life and words cannot express my gratitude.
