Jun Watanabe: Ironman Triathlete, Ultra Endurance Runner and Cyclist, & lululemon enthusiast!

Although Jun leads the lululemon MOMENTUM Run group in Seattle, running was not initially a part of his athletic background. As a NCAA Division I collegiate swimmer and water polo player, Jun associated his running experiences with dreadful pre-season conditioning practices. Even when he excelled as a triathlete after college, the run discipline was a painful experience, where the only goal was to hold onto the lead for as long as possible before crossing the finish line.

It wasn’t until Jun experienced his first runner’s high while training for a marathon that he started to enjoy the run experience and started to hold his own. Since that pivotal day, Jun has taken on a completely new approach to athletics and life; as Arthur Ashe said it best, “Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome.”

An accomplished athlete, Jun has competed on the world stage in numerous Ironman triathlons, ultra endurance runs, and cycling events. He looks forward to the day when he will be competing with the best at the Western States 100, and hopes to one day hold the Death Valley Cup, an award presented to any athlete finishing both the Badwater Ultra Marathon (135 mile run) and the Furnace Creek 508 (508 mile bike) races in the same year.

Professionally, Jun is a social entrepreneur. He has consulted for, and has started several businesses over the years. Currently, Jun is the Founder and CEO of Alegup Strategies, Inc., a company that provides life skills to students of all ages to help them live successful and fulfilling lives. In addition to Alegup, Jun also serves as the Executive Director for the ITP Foundation, a non-profit established to increase awareness and improve diagnosis and treatment of children and adolescents with Immune Thrombocytopenia.

Jun’s enthusiasm for health and fitness, community building, and living an active lifestyle keeps him busy. In addition to his professional endeavors, Jun currently works with the board of directors for the Seattle YMCA as a member of their community outreach committee and is a division lead for their Partners with Youth campaign.

Jun is thrilled to have had the opportunity to share his love of running with lululemon enthusiasts around Seattle and continues to organize the U-Village run club. So, come join him and other runners of all fitness levels and ages, Tuesday evenings, 6:30pm at the U-Village lululemon store. Everyone is welcome! See you there!"
